Fast eineinhalb Jahre nach dem Sturz des Assad-Regimes steht Syrien vor enormen Herausforderungen. Weite Teile des Landes – Wohngebiete und Straßen, das Wasser- und Stromnetz, Schulen und Krankenhäuser – sind zerstört oder beschädigt, mehr als fünf Millionen Menschen intern vertrieben, 15,6 Millionen Syrer:innen auf humanitäre Hilfe angewiesen. Aus Milizen müssen professionelle Sicherheitskräfte werden, der Staatssektor muss reformiert, die Wirtschaft angekurbelt und der Wiederaufbau finanziert werden. Dafür braucht es geeignete Investitionsbedingungen, Minen müssen geräumt, Massengräber ausgehoben und Kriegsverbrecher gefasst und vor Gericht gestellt werden. In this event, we will kick off Israeli Apartheid Week, a week of events taking place in universities across Germany, which seek to raise awareness of Israel’s apartheid regime and the necessity for an academic boycott of Israeli institutions. On Monday, April 20, we will hear from three different anthropologists about their experiences and research relating to Israeli apartheid.

The first speaker, Thayer Hastings, will speak about the violence Israel’s bureaucracy has inflicted upon Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem. He has investigated the forms of governance which emerge from bureaucratic processes intended to create a Jewish majority in the land of Palestine, and analyzed the use of the term “apartheid” in its legal and historical dimensions.

The second guest, Fadi Bardawil, will speak about the role of Western and Zionist anthropology in the erasure of Palestinians historical presence on the land of Palestine. Our third guest will be a member of the Decoco collective who will speak about the complicity of German academic institutions in Israel’s apartheid system and how they punish anti-Zionist dissent.

Finally, we will connect the discussion to our campaign for an institute-wide boycott in the Anthropological Department at the Free University of Berlin and explain why it is important to build a grassroots movement to advocate for severing ties with Israeli academia.

On April 30, 2026, Shir Hever will be our guest and will share his insights with us. The discussion will focus on Germany’s historical and legal responsibility to stand against racism and genocide. He will also address why universities should support the academic boycott of Israeli institutions and what challenges arise when international law and German “reasons of state” come into conflict. Every year on April 24, Armenians around the world commemorate the genocide in which, starting in 1915, the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire was systematically destroyed and displaced. It is one of the best-documented genocides in modern history. Evidence of the atrocities can also be found in the files of the German Foreign Office, for the German Empire – an ally of Turkey in the First World War – had sent military advisers to support it, who were involved in the decisions of the Turkish rulers. The panel will discuss the patterns that link these atrocities across time and geography, as well as the consequences of denial and impunity. How do arms sales, geopolitical alliances, and energy interests determine which lives are protected and which are ignored? And what obligations does Germany have, stemming from its historical entanglements, beyond mere acknowledgment?

As Israel continues its genocide in Gaza and unleashes unprecedented aggression against the people of the West Bank, Lebanon, and Iran, the EU sends millions to Israeli universities. Through the Horizon program, Israel received 1.1 billion euros over the past three years, more than all but two EU member states.
These funds and partnerships are essential to Israeli academia, with Israel’s Academy of Science and Humanities saying expulsion from the program would be “almost a death knell” for Israeli research.

Israel’s university system enables its occupation of Palestinian land and regional aggression by providing essential technology and other services for its genocidal military. Projects without direct military links play a key role in normalizing its apartheid system by allowing an entity based on ethnic cleansing and genocide to present itself as a beacon of scientific progress. While the EU removed Russia from Horizon almost immediately after its invasion of Ukraine, Israel has remained in the program after over two years of genocide in Gaza and attacks against its neighbours.

On 27 March, students in over 30 cities across the EU demonstrated to demand the removal of Israel from the Horizon program. Look and listen to 2 speeches in Berlin at the ‚Europäisches Haus‘ to say no more EU funds for genocide!

This panel brings together the Gazan authors behind Indicia’s special three-story zine issue to discuss their experimental approaches to documenting, imagining, and witnessing Gaza. Across three distinct, yet connected stories, the authors explore an alternative timeline where collective land systems continued uninterrupted, the material truth and deception of concrete infrastructure, and the perspectives of non-human others who live alongside us in silence.

Rather than providing a testimony, these zines practice what the authors call „grounded imagination“ -creative work deeply rooted in research, oral history, ecological knowledge, and material reality. Together, they refuse the flattening of Gaza into a single story, instead offering multiple temporalities, scales, and perspectives that cannot be reconciled into one neat label.

Seit zweieinhalb Jahren wirkt der deutsche Kulturbetrieb mitunter wie unter einer Glocke. Während Kulturschaffende weltweit Benefizkonzerte für Gaza veranstalten oder mit palästinensischen Künstler:innen eine Gaza Biennale organisieren, halten sich ihre Kolleg:innen in Deutschland auffällig zurück. Zu groß ist die Angst, als „israelfeindlich“ oder „antisemitisch“ diffamiert zu werden. Bis heute werden Theaterinszenierungen, Konzerte und Ausstellungen abgesagt – wer etwas Kritisches plant, vermeidet Aufmerksamkeit. Welche gesellschaftlichen und politischen Folgen hat dieses Schweigen? Ist es nicht Aufgabe von Künstler:innen, sich gegen Unterdrückung und für Menschenrechte einzusetzen und mit verfolgten Kolleg:innen zu solidarisieren – auch um die eigene künstlerische Freiheit zu verteidigen? Und wie können Intendanten, Regisseurinnen, bildende Künstler und Musikerinnen zurückfinden zu einer Sprache, die das Leid und die Rechte aller Menschen thematisiert?
